Pimped up cottage cheese

There's such an 80s diet feel to cottage cheese, that, whenever I buy it, I feel like I should flick my perm and rush off to an aerobics class. This is strange, as I buy it a lot. Despite the horrible dieting rep, I love it. I'm sure if it was Italian and double the price we'd all like it a lot more, but it suffers from its familiarity. I had some (cheap) ricotta last night and I swear my creamy cottage cheese is ten times nicer.
I like to tart it up a bit with some lemon zest, a few thyme leaves, pepper and a glug of olive oil. And then I put it on everything from crumpets to jacket potatoes. It's a good alternative to the ubiquitous (in our house anyway) cheddar cheese. The kids love it too.

  1. I grew up on cottage cheese, my ma thought it was very healthy. My brother still buys it and loves it with marmite on fresh bread or crackers!

  3. cottage cheese and fresh fruit? That's a great twist on the old-school cottage cheese with pineapple chunks. In fact come to mention it, I've got some fresh pineapple at the mo', that's tomorrow's lunch sorted!
Two hippos: I'm glad your mother's enthusiasm didn't put off your brother. I'm going to try it with marmite.

  4. I like cottage cheese too, love the cool creaminess of it, my favourite way is with lots of freshly ground black pepper.

  5. Dear Lucy,

I know that this is irrelevant to the post and consequently I'm a terrible person, but I simply have to convey to you the depths of my jealousy that you got to interview JAMES FLIPPING MCAVOY!!!

My heart wept with the envy of it all. Is he truly wonderful in real life? Of course he must be. That accent is so swoon-worthy.

    *creeps away sheepishly*
